https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awtiZEiiAE8 Music video for Embody by SebastiAn 2:30-2:46 I think these shots speak to me particularly because of the song itself. The music video has a really great "feeling good" vibe to it. From the beginning you get the impression that the people are unaware or ignoring the kid dancing around them. I think the last two shots kinda sum up the point of the video. The last couple of shots, you see a girl who is listening to the song, dancing in her room. The dancing boy from the video is dancing along with her. You see her dad walking up the stairs, entering the room complaining about the noise level. At that point he turns off her radio and the boy disappears. The next shot she turns on the song again and the boy returns, dancing along with her. I think these shots really speak to me because the idea of music is so abstract. I think this way, the last couple of shots sum up the theme of the music video and add a visual confirmation that the boy is actually just the spirit of the song and when all the people in the music video listened to Embody, the spirit of the song came alive. I think the other shots are also just incredibly telling of what music is, because in many of the shots, there are people doing a bunch of random things and thats really what music is about the randomness of it all. I chose this song to discuss because it the song that has brought me great happiness and is the song that's set me to have the life ambitions that I have today.

What I hear

Because I live in Manhattan, I find it can be hard to find a moment of silence. Which is why, late at night, you can find me at the 72nd Street Pier. It’s become a tradition that whenever I need to find some peace of mind, I’ll go to the pier and listen to my favorite music and people watch. By doing so, I am able to get back to my happy place. The few times I’ve gone without music have been really calming. You hear the ocean. Mixed in with the sound of the waves, which are so gentle and quiet, are the hard breaths of the late night runners. Keeping me company from time to time are pigeons, who if you listen carefully coo to the sound of the waves. Everything is so quiet, with the occasional loud and high pitched noise of the passing plane. I go at night, to avoid seeing children. Who will sometimes scream at a very joyous yet piercing volume. Everything is so quiet, unless you count my music, or the airplanes, everything is at a very low and relaxing volume. Avoiding the thrills of the city is one of my specialties. Sometimes living in Manhattan is just this non-stop of cacophonies that can drive you crazy. However, throughout the year, no matter how cold or how hot, Riverside Park late at night is where you can find some peace.

Artist Statement

In my mind, music is an art form that doesn’t need translation or interpretation. While we can try to understand it, music in its most pure form is a celebration of rhythm.  

The communities that we have grown up in have widely influenced musicians and have influenced us to be the people we are today. My art is meant to show people what music is capable of. Within our own communities or even at home, my art in its most sincere form is meant to remind people why they love music.

The feeling you get after your first concert or listening to your favourite album. There is a feeling of familiarity and a feeling of euphoria. Music can imitate a lot of settings and emotions which is why I think it’s important to understand that all art forms thrive with the inclusion of music. Film, Theatre, etc all use music to their advantage. Music in art and media is meant to invoke a reaction, an emotion. 

I attribute most of my passions to the work of Parisian musicians and producers, who have taught me that music transcends boarders and unites people. Understanding how music affects us all is understanding what art is. My major influencers include the Ed Banger Crew, who have shown me that being different can be beautiful, Colombian musician Juanes for shaping me into the person I am today, and all musicians that have come before our time that have influenced the genres we treasure today.
